Bob Hochstadter

Director of Tennis

Our Director of Tennis for the last 16 years, Bob Hochstadter brings a great deal of experience to Nellie Gail Ranch as an administrator, player and coach.   He has over 35 years of tennis club experience, having served as a Head Tennis Professional and General Manager of four different Southern California facilities.

As a coach and tennis instructor, Bob is one of the most respected in the business nationally. Bob has coached numerous sectionally and nationally ranked juniors. Over 60 of his students have received tennis scholarships to universities around the country, and he has coached three NCAA champions. Even the infamous tennis duo, the Bryan Brothers, on their website list Bob as one of their favorite coaches.

A collegiate All-American at Texas A&M University at Commerce, Texas, Bob helped lead the 1972 men's tennis team to the school's first NAIA National Championship and as part of that effort has since been inducted into the University's Athletic Hall of Fame. During that championship year, Bob earned Most Valuable Player honors after winning the Lone Star Conference Single Championship and teaming with his doubles partner, Harry Fritz, to win the NAIA National Doubles Championship. In 1973, Bob also won the NAIA National Singles Championship. He played on the professional tennis tour in 1974 before coming back to California to work at his first tennis club. Bob has continued to play tennis competitively and was the 1985 International USPTA (teaching professionals) Mixed Doubles Champion. In 1989 Bob was ranked #1 in Southern California in men's 35 and over doubles. Most recently, Bob played on Nellie Gail's 2008 USTA 4.5 Men's Senior Team that won the Southern California section and took 3rd place in the national competition.

Bob has been a member of the prestigious Board of Directors of the Southern California Tennis Association for the past six years, which is the governing institution for tennis in Southern California. He was also the founding President and current Board member of the Orange County Community Tennis Association, which puts on tournaments and leagues in Orange County. Bob was awarded a huge accolade in 2007 when he received the Outstanding Contributor to Tennis Award from the OCCTA.  Bob's booming voice and quick wit also made him the popular announcer voice of the Newport Beach Breakers World Team Tennis events for several years.

Bob also gives back to the community, hosting annual open houses at Nellie Gail for families and kids with fun tennis events and giveaways. In October, 2008, he spearheaded the collection of more than $8,500 in tennis equipment to donate to the Disney GOALS Program (serving disadvantaged Orange County youth through Growth Opportunities through Athletics, Learning & Service). He and his wife, Jennifer, have a son and daughter who also help out at the tennis club.
